Duke...

Our direct competition for league places this season are...Spurs...Everton...Southampton...

Three things seem obvious:

1) we are all wary of Allardyce shitting himself and returning to 'respect the point' territory.

2) we are all wary of the disappointments of the previous decade or so.

3) see reason one,

Style wise we are very good

To carry on we need to stay positive in our approach, avoid injuries and strengthen in January a bit

There's no one outside the champions league clubs we should fear at the moment

I'd say we could finish 7th this year quite easily. Would I change tactics for the bigger clubs? No. Just go for it as sitting back is our downfall. Saying that I would park the bus against Chelsea just to annoy Jose.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
Will depend on avoiding injuries as always.

We have some strikers that can score but as important, we have a strong midfield now that is mobile and that is where the game is often won. Top 10 should be our minimum aim and top 6 our "stretch goal" as those books on business success always say :-)

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
Are we good enough to be ' The best of the Rest' after the top teams: Chelsea; Man City; L'pool; Man Utd; Arsenal; Spurs. These are usually the top 6 then you invariably have Everton in 7th

Then 3 teams who have a reasonable season, then the 10 teams below are separated by about 10 points. Are we good enough to get Everton off of 7th place. This season we will be doing well to finish 8th or 9th with a nice cushion between us and the bottom 10.

What's getting us going is the addition of attacking players with pace which is needed in the premier League.
Having said that, if you assume all the top 6 teams will sort their selves out by the end of the season, only S'hampton have been shocking people, can they maintain that form? Who knows, can we maintain our form, hopefully.

I do reckon however that Palace and Stoke won't have as good a season as they had last season.

The end of season table will hopefully be: Top 6 then Irons and Everton and S'hampton in that order!

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
So many variables, but as I and others have said before, this season looks to be the most topsy turvy one to date, as far as the form of the usual suspects.

Only the three teams above us have been playing better than us so far. All the other below have been totally unconvincing....even the ones that beat us, which is why they are still below us even with the three point head starts they got from us.

I feel we can keep our good form the most part, so our finishing position may well have a lot to do with how well and how quickly the other top half teams can recover.

It seems too much to dream of a top four finish, but this season represents the best chance for a top four shake up, and unlikely as it seems, we and Southampton should not disbelieve the possibilty.

I woudln't have dared to dream to hope for this before the season got under way, but looking at things so far.........naaaah.....or maybe?.......naaaah........erm?

The dream we dare not say out loud though, is to have european football back again for our last season at the Boleyn Ground......FA Cup win or 5th/6th plave would do though.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
Ok so the general feeling on the thread is that we're now expected to finish between 5th - 8th...

For a 5th place finish you need around 72 - 62 points (going on the last decade)

That's about 18 wins - 20 wins!

The lowest placed 8th place has been 49 points, only twice in a decade.

Any other season usually 49 points would mean around 9th - 12th.

I'd be very happy and consider this season successful if this team could match or beat the 57 points the 98/99 squad accrued.

57 points would have us in 8th spot if we went by last season's totals

6th-9th is what is now expected.

But can you imagine how great it would be to finish top 4.

I'd be giving it the Barry mcguigan.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
I think 6th is achievable. Especially with alot of the bigger teams struggling. Anything above tenth would be great.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
I've just returned from a few days away so got to see the game on my Sky + box. I thought we played OK but were being outplayed by Burnley. A more clinical side would have been one or two goals up by half time.

Of course we'd have still scored 3 but a better finishing side would have beaten us or should at least have had a draw. I'm pleased we're doing well but Sakho will most likely dry up at some stage so let's keep our feet on the ground.

We won't be top 4 by season's end but then I'm just happy we are not once again relegation candidates....

Yes, we've only played 3 of the top 6 so far.

Let's be honest we've not really played any great teams yet, and when we've played above average sides we've lost.

Saturday is our first true test.

We are doing well but the Southampton game was a cause for concern. Let's see how we are in late November, early December.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
Very unlikely that we would finish above any of:

Chelsea, Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Liverpool

We could finish above one or all of:

Southampton, Spurs, Everton

We should finish above the rest.

So 6th ot 9th.

Re: SO,.,..Taking the Claret and Blue specs off for a moment, Just how good are we ?
Firstly, we have the strongest squad that l can remember going back to the early sixties
With the prospect of moving into a fabulous new stadium in a couple of years, things have never looked better for us to the point where we should be able to challenge the top 4/5 clubs in the EPL
Secondly, lets not jump the gun, there is still plenty that needs sorting out
We need at least another CH, two if Reid leaves & the new boy will need to settle in quickly. Collins is ageing, Tomkins is often erratic (though improving)
We need another GK. I don't have a problem with Adrian but

Eggy, I said I would settle for a clean sheet, I hastily forgot to add that I fully expect Sakho and Valencia to grab one each to bring us within a point of the "REIGNING champs".
